Sorry - I think I've just repeated Bill East's inestimable
posting to the whole list. Well, it's Monday and the
fingers aren't working too well...
What I meant to say was this. Is this moving of SS. Peter & Paul
another Vatican II-ism? And is Paul being rehabilitated nowadays?
It doesn't seem long since 29 June was being observed as St Peter's
Day only (vide last year's FEAST posting).
[snip, snip]
>>. The Epistle for this Sunday is from 1 Peter 5, which reads:
> >
> >... Sobrii estote, et
> > vigilare: quia adversarius vester diabolus tanquam leo rugiens circuit,
> > quaerens quem devoret, cui resistite fortes in fide . . .
> >
> > "... Be sober, be
> > vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh
> > about seeking whom he may devour: whom resist stedfast in the faith . . ."
> >
> > We can see very clearly where 'supplicandi' and 'deprecatio' are coming
> > from. The evil from which we require deliverance is the Devil himself.

Presumably that explains the presence of this phrase in Compline, and
leads inexorably into prayer for deliverance from all perils and
dangers of the night.
