Richard,
I am not currently working on Gregorian eschatology, but have been
collecting data on a related topic, Gregorian mysticism. Instead of viewing
the "Gregorian Reform" as a political power grab, it is possible to see it
as a wave of spiritual enthusiasm. For an emblematic image, see the mosaic
in the church of Gregorio VII, reproduced rather badly in BIBLIOTHECA
SANCTORUM 8:377-78.
Of course, the so-called "Gregorian Reform" may in fact be the last
wave of the great millennial reform movement which you have been studying.
That perspective is hazarded in the conclusion to CHURCH REFORM AND SOCIAL
CHANGE, my Dominic of Sora book which Penn just published.
Good luck with all your projects.
