Dear Bella, James and Otfried,
Thanks for your help and interest. Verdille sounds very tempting--I'll
have to check it out with Robert's itinerary. I like the image of the
usurer you described--it sounds like something out of Little's Pride
before Avarice. A thought--gluttony has been traditionally linked to
lust, and avaricious people such as usurers are linked to insatiability in
other forms, called the mouth of hell, and likened to the all-devouring
vagina of the prostitute. It would seem that voraciousness of sexual and
eating sort were linked and usurers were linked to both through their
'insatiability' for money. They also 'multiplied' money unnaturally, and
this unnatural reproduction had some, like the image you describe, link
them with homosexuals in a common area of hell (punished for their
'unnatural' activity). Otfried--I'll get you the reference asap, but I'm
reduced to using the college computer lab and so will have to look it up
from home. Thanks again everyone!
