For all those thinking of going to Leeds next year, I am planning a
session provisionally titled:
Indulgences in Theory and Practice: Pilgrimages, Crusades, and Beyond
The idea of the session is to take a fresh look at indulgences in the
widest sense, something which has not been attempted much since Paulus
and Gottlob.
Dr. Theresa Gross-Diaz of Loyola University (Chicago) will be
presenting a paper on the theory and practice of indulgences and
pilgrimage, particularly to St. James in Compostella.
A second paper will present the concept of indulgences as offered by
the circle of Peter the Chanter in the early thirteenth century in
their preaching to lay audiences and theological treatises. Both
papers will also address audience response and criticism.
We would like to draw in a third person to present a paper covering a
complementary topic. Possibilites include: responses to and
conceptions of indulgences in lay literature, or contact with
indulgences of the sort offered in return for donations to church
building schemes... the possibilities are virtually limitless. Papers
on the early or late medieval period are especially welcome. We would
like to redeem the idea of indulgence and figure out what made it
tick.
If you are interested, please send a provisional paper title and
description of what topic you would like to present [time limit at
Leeds is 20 minutes] to [log in to unmask] If you aren't
but know a colleague that might be, please spread the word!
