About Pope Joan we should perhaps remember that this is not just a
misconception ABOUT the Middle Ages, but also OF the Middle Ages. The
story continues to be retold at least into the 15th century (in
copies and translations of Honore' Bonet's _L'Arbre des batailles_,
for example).
