There's always H. C. Lea's "Inquisition in the Middle Ages" (3vv. New
York, 1888, repr. 1955) and Vacandard's "The Inquistion: a Critical
and Historical Study of the Coercise Power of the Church" (English
transl. B. L. Conway, London 1908).
More recently, Bernard Hamilton gives a very nice introduction to the
subject in his little book "The Medieval Inquisition" (London: Edward
Arnold, 1981); but then again, I would say that -- he's my supervisor.
