I recommend: PETERS, Edward M., *The Inquisition*
(Berkeley, Univ. of California Press,, 1989), which is now out of print,
but still available from Berkeley bookstores. It deals with historiography
and myth and 'black legend', chiefly concerning the Spanish Inquisition,
but, as I recall, going over the whole field, and including Protestant
historiography, Enlightenment, Romanticism, Gothic horror, etc. I've
ordered it for our Library. I'm surprised that it is not at all well-known.
Peters is the Henry C. Lea Professor at U. of Penn., and an outstanding
scholar.
