I'm sure that most of the members of this list have already seen the
flyer for Notre Dame's fall conference (to be held October 27-29),
but for those who haven't, I offer the following blatent, unashamed
advertisement:
"IN THE SHADOW OF THE MILLENIUM: Jews and Christians in 12th-Century
Europe"
"The purpose of this conference is to reassess Jewish-Christian
relations in 12th-century Europe, to consider why there could be at
once such violence and such open interaction. It is our hope that
participants will press beyond the outstanding body of scholarship
which has investigated the Chronicles of the first Crusade, and set a
new agenda for discussing Jewish-Christian relations in 12th-century
Europe."
Scheduled speakers include:
William Jordan and Anna Abulafia on "Interreligious Polemics:
Literary Perspectives."
Jeremy Cohen, Gavin Langmuir, Ivan Marcus, and Elliot Wolfson on
"Constructing Jewish and Christian `Others'"
Robert Chazan and Robert Lerner on "Millenial Constructions"
Alfred HAverkamp, Gerard Nahon, and Robert Stacey on "History and
Community"
Maureen Boulton, Susan Einbinder, and Jan Ziolkowski on "Sacred and
Vernacular Literature"
Miri Rubin and Jonathan Elukin on "Sacred Rites and their Dis-
contents"
Walter Cahn and Richard Newhauser on "Images and Ethics"
Michel Signer and John Van Engen on "Biblical Exigesis and Social
Reality"
