The Assumption is observed in the East with as much devotion, if not more, as in the West, and on
the same day. I was in Corfu a few years ago and the whole village turned out to celebrate the feast
with great rejoicing. A few days later I visited Albania (this was only about a year after the death of
Enver Hoxha) and my guide pointed out a monastery at the top of a very remote mountain;
apparently some 3,000 people had climed to the top to celebrate the Assumption.
