Full-Time Faculty in Health/Healthcare Design
Description
The Department of Design in the School of Design and Creative Technologies
at The University of Texas at Austin (UT) seeks one full-time colleague
with a focus in health-related design. We encourage applicants from both
academia and seasoned practice eager to join a team of whole-hearted
collaborators in reinventing design education for the twenty-first century.
Salary is competitive. Rank, tenure status and term of appointment
commensurate with experience. Earliest start date is May 2020.

The Design Department at UT prepares students for careers in the
increasingly varied fields where professional designers practice. Our
program takes advantage of our home inside a top tier university by
exploring the places where design overlaps with other disciplines (like
medicine, social science, business and engineering) while maintaining
reverence for traditional design craft. Our students study with faculty
experts in Graphic Design, Industrial and Product Design, Design
Ethnography, Interaction Design and Design History, making our program one
of the broadest and deepest a design school can offer. We offer two
undergraduate degrees and two graduate degrees, as well as extensive
additional coursework geared toward students majoring elsewhere on campus
who wish to be more designerly in their approach to their work. The design
department strives to be a welcoming and nurturing environment for people
with diverse perspectives and backgrounds.

We have recently reimagined our coursework, curriculum, and structure from
the point of view that design is more powerful and informed when practiced
in concert with other disciplines. This role would specifically be in
support of our forward-thinking partnership with the Dell School of
Medicine, which centers around a new graduate degree (an MA in Design in
Health). This role would include teaching and service related to the MA in
Design in Health as well as teaching and service in the department at
large, depending on individual experience. Meaning we are looking for
someone who knows Design in Health as well as Design in general.

More specifically we seek leadership for the Design in Health program.
Responsibilities may include:

graduate student advising, specifically in the Design in Health program,
including curricular supervision as well as industry
guidance/representation of the Design in Health program on and off campus,
informing prospective students, cultivating external partnerships, and
attending key events
maintaining strategic and curricular alignment with our partners at the
Design Institute for Health at the Dell Medical School and potential
industry partners
Teaching responsibilities may include the following:

teaching core courses in the Design in Health graduate program (could
include skills courses or practicum/studio courses)
developing and teaching thematic/special topics courses in the successful
candidate’s area of expertise at both the undergraduate and graduate levels
interdisciplinary team-taught courses that enroll students from multiple
design specializations and/or university departments
undergraduate or graduate independent study supervisions
graduate final project or thesis supervisions
In addition to teaching, the full-time faculty in health design will
participate in administrative and student service activities, as all
fulltime faculty do. Tenure-track or tenured faculty members are also
expected to maintain an active agenda of scholarly research or creative
professional practice. Non-tenure-track faculty in the Department of Design
are encouraged to maintain a professional creative practice if they wish.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
Candidates for this position must:

have a strong portfolio of recent design work that includes (but need not
be limited to) work related to health
have earned a terminal degree in their field, OR demonstrate equivalent
professional experience
have a record of working productively and collegially with people of
diverse disciplines, ranks, races, ethnicities, nationalities, gender
identities, sexual orientations, ages, and abilities.
Demonstrate a commitment to expanding the diversity of the department’s
faculty and students and to creating a productive department culture
inclusive of differing backgrounds and viewpoints.
Preferred Qualifications:
We are particularly interested in candidates who:

have a record of successful collaboration across disciplines and across
organizational units.
have experience teaching both small- and large-enrollment courses, and/or
hybrid or online courses in design.
have experience developing new courses and curricula in design.
can demonstrate (through degrees earned, portfolio of work, or writings)
expertise in a field complementary to design, i.e have worked productively
outside of the design discipline.
can demonstrate familiarity with contemporary design processes and
workflows including relevant software tools, and can demonstrate a high
level of craftsmanship in their chosen design discipline.
can demonstrate (through degrees earned, portfolio of work, writings, or
course syllabuses) engagement with design ethics.
Application Instructions
To apply for the position, please submit the following to Interfolio at
https://apply.interfolio.com/73776:

A letter of application explaining your qualifications for, and interest
in, the position;
A curriculum vitae (CV) or professional résumé;
A link to or pdf of your portfolio of recent work;
Contact information for three references (letters will be requested only
for finalists).
Review of applications to begin March 15, 2020, but the position will
remain open until filled.

SDCT encourages applications from candidates belonging to groups that have
been historically underrepresented in higher education, including women,
racial and ethnic minorities, the differently-abled, and members of the
LGBTQIA community.

Questions about the application process and Interfolio may be directed to
SDCT Executive Assistant Cameron Weed ([log in to unmask]); questions
about the position itself may be directed to search committee chair Jose
Colucci ([log in to unmask]).

If you are excited about the possibilities of working in the Department of
Design, but don’t fit this particular job description, please see our open
call for faculty at https://apply.interfolio.com/68936.
