Dear All
Following the thread about replicas we also have some items which might be of interest to the list.
Our good friend, Richard, died last year and on behalf of his wife we are selling part of his handling/workshop collections. Currently this involves:
1. Roman Domestic: A small collection of excellent quality replica Samian ware, a good sized mortaria, a collection of horn and wooden spoons, a handled iron skillet, 6 wax tablets and wooden styli, a useable rotary quern, a useable saddle quern, 2 staved wooden buckets, a replica small brass Roman abacus, a pipe clay Venus moulded from an unknown original, a resin copy of the Welwyn mother goddess made by Tony Rook who excavated the site, a replica baby feeding bottle and a small votary bust (possibly Alexander the Great as the hair is indicative of horns). There is also a large chalk replica of a typical 'Celtic' head. There is also a quantity of original ceramic building material, pot sherds and tesserae of various sizes including a small piece still joined with mortar. The retail value of this collection is about £350, we would be seeking £200.
2. Roman Military: Auxiliary soldier's kit, bronze helmet, Lorica Hamata mail armour, Cinglum belt, spear, shield, sword and scabbard. The retail value of this collection is about £650, we would be seeking £400.
3. Victorian: A bundle of straw plait for handling, demonstration or use. We would be seeking £10 for this item.
4. World War Two: Replica ARP Warden's overalls with original and quality repro lapel badges, buttons and arm band. There is also a useable stirrup pump, a metal ammo box, two working wooden alarm rattles, an enamel potty (for use in the shelter!), a metal blackout light filter, appropriate toys, a good collection of original and repro documents and posters, 5 plastic helmets (one adapted for the ARP warden) and a collection of circa 15 short(broom)sticks suitable for demonstrations of Home Guard drill. The retail value of this collection is about £150, we would be seeking £90.
These are all museum quality items and would be very useful for anyone updating, or developing workshops. We have pictures of all items which can be sent on request. Please note that items must be sold as collections and not individually. They can be collected by arrangement from our address in Aylesbury, Bucks. The bundle of straw plait could be posted. Payment please in cash, by cheque, PayPal. BACS can also be arranged but note that these are one off purchases and we cannot provide invoices or account set-up supplier details. We can, however, provide receipts as required.
We do hope that these items can go to good homes. Richard was a passionate and expert teacher and workshop leader with many years experience. Our distress at losing him so untimely is matched by our desire to see his collections go to equally enthusiastic new homes to excite and enthuse the next generations.
Please get in touch if you have any questions or would like photos of the items.
Regards
Towse and Graham Harrison
