Hello everyone,
Metaphors come up from time to time on the list in different ways, and I
think as designers we generally recognise their importance. Over the last
couple of years, some of you will have used—or seen a presentation on—the
New Metaphors toolkit which we've been developing in the Imaginaries Lab at
Carnegie Mellon School of Design. It's a card deck designed to help
facilitate idea generation and reframing through creating novel metaphors,
and we've developed it through workshops at both academic and design/UX
industry conferences around the world, and via teaching practice.
More details: http://newmetaphors.com including a free downloadable version.
I'm pleased to say the New Metaphors toolkit is now available to pre-order
as a printed set (27 GBP —approx 35 USD / 32 EUR), via backing the project
on the Crowdfunder website: https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/new-metaphors
There's a paper with the background to the project here, from earlier this
year:
Dan Lockton, Devika Singh, Saloni Sabnis, Michelle Chou, Sarah Foley,
Alejandro Pantoja (2019). ‘New Metaphors: A Workshop Method for Generating
Ideas and Reframing Problems in Design and Beyond’. *C&C 2019: ACM
Conference on Creativity & Cognition*. June 2019, San Diego.

Many people have created similar methods for different purposes, and we are
not claiming originality, nor any quantifiable effect on the ideation
process, but rather offering it as a tool or resource which may help people
develop new ways to think or frame ideas and concepts, from the everyday to
the collective challenges facing us as a planet.
Best wishes
Dan
