Dear All *Apologies for cross-posting*,
We thought you might like to know about our recent case study, bringing together a number of strands beneath the umbrella term of ‘digitisation’.
Our client organisation had already digitised some of their archives and we were called upon to offer further consultation.
With a number of existing databases, together with additional ones created for their newly digitised material, they were keen to find a system for managing these and publishing only selected content. This software ultimately enabled them to capture keywords and metadata in order to offer their visitors a comprehensive search facility obtained via a bespoke webpage.
Opening access through digitisation was an important factor in this particular case, but was extended to include physical access too with the incorporation of a Virtual Reality Tour. The tour captured 360 degree images of the inside of their historic building and recorded key information so that all three databases could be linked and the information gathered and brought together quickly and easily. Members and visitors are now able to move between people, items and location effortlessly, while being provided with any further archival material that might be connected.
This case study will be really helpful for anyone who wishes to learn more about digitisation and in what ways and to what extent it grants accessibility.
You can find the case study here and we hope that you find the content both informative and helpful: https://www.townswebarchiving.com/2019/06/the-royal-college-of-surgeons-of-edinburgh-managing-and-publishing-medical-and-institutional-archives/
Many thanks,
Jess
