That is true but despite the fact that as a Freelance Facilitator and Costumed Interpreter I am not in contact with a regular group of children, the sites and the Interpretation providers expect a DBS certificate. I have done Father Christmas at the same venue for15 years and they apply for DBS checks, at one site they quite rightly said that there was no need for a DBS for the reason Pippa has outlined, a conversation to this end was taking place in a office area that was adjacent to the gift shop, a grandmother who was with a group of children overheard what was a private conversation, and went on TripAdvisor saying none of the Live Interpreters were DBS checked, she even admitted in her post she had "overheard" this conversation, the site replied stating just what Pippa has said, but it was perceived badly.
Most people who do Father Christmas are therefore holders of DBS certification as you won't really get bookings without it.
Regards
Clive

Hi,
Be wary of assuming you can DBS check Father Christmas! Only people with regular and unsupervised contact with the same group of children are eligible for checks. Share Museums East have a good resource on this.
http://www.sharemuseumseast.org.uk/resources/safeguarding-for-museums-dbs/
If children are always supervised by their parent/carer/responsible adult and are never alone with Father Christmas then he fails the unsupervised criteria and as he is unlikely to be regularly meeting the same group of children (once a year on Christmas Eve doesn't count as regular according to the DBS criteria!) then you can't ask for a check.
Best wishes
Pippa
