Frederick, I agree with your statement above. I think we need to be deeply concerned. ANYONE who feels misrepresented should be taken seriously. But, I’m not sure about your proposed treatment of offenders.
As a matter of principle and practice in good design research (as opposed to conventional statistical methods) I have found that outliers provide some of our best insights.
In opinion polling the majority can often be wrong.
