Dear Colleagues,
Yesterday, I received three more replies to the question, "Do people from an art and design background avoid posting to the PhD-Design list because they are afraid of being attacked or treated disrespectfully by people from a background in the scientific or technical disciplines?”
Here are the additional answers:
(1)
I avoid posting to the PhD Design list for well documented reasons. Nigel Cross and Teena Clerke’s repeated critical comments about the list reflect my own experience. I have also expressed these views on the list.
I do not experience the list as a welcoming or safe place for expression of *my* contributions.
There is a heavy weight of similar personal experiences posted publicly on this topic, so I’m not sure what this survey of yours will add, apart from perhaps certain list members being able to hear it better from you than from me.

I come from an Art & Design background and worked as a practitioner for many years before taking a university post and now have a relatively 'senior' position. Although I have contributed to the list intermittently, and I am sure I have been guilty of making inappropriate comments myself, I have certainly avoided posting on many occasions through fear of 'being attacked or treated disrespectfully by people from a background in the scientific or technical disciplines?”. The relative infancy of PhD research in the creative arts seems to elicit these attacks rather than encourage useful advice and constructive debate. I suspect that for younger or 'early career' art & design academics coming from a practice-based background, this is extremely intimidating.
I can only think of one occasion when I felt I was being personally 'attacked'. Art & Design as a whole does of course come under attack on the list from certain serial offenders. But as another respondent has observed, it seems more common for those from Art & Design to be ignored. Which seems odd in the context of a field called 'Design'.

I know from private conversations, off list, of several people who would not feel comfortable emailing you on this topic.

If you come from an art or design background and you avoid posting to the list for fear of personal attacks from people in the traditional science and technology disciplines, I would like to hear from you. This includes people in design history and the humanities. This quick survey will end this afternoon at 17:00 (5 p.m.) CEST.
In your reply, please let me know who you are, describe your background, and tell me what you do now. This information will remain confidential. I will gather the cumulative data and post it to the list late today, Friday, August 31.
If you want to write a statement about why you avoid posting to the list, I will include your statement while protecting your identity.
Yours,
Ken
