Dear Colleagues,
Last week and this, I posted a research request to see whether list with a scientific or technical background avoid posting on the PhD-Design list because doing so subjects them to attacks on the list by people from an art and design background. I promised anonymity for all respondents. I did not post this query because I see this as a serious problem — I posted it because someone wrote to me that a serious problem exists, and I wanted to know whether this was so. In my view this is a minor problem, affecting only a few people on the list. This query only involved the list — the situation may be different for people from a scientific or technical background in the face-to-face workplace at art and design schools.
On August 24, I stated my views concerning the PhD-Design list. I stated that posts from people with a science and technology background are frequent and unhindered. You will find my post in the list archive for August. You can also use the list search engine using my email address for posts sent in August. It will turn up as item 032005.
When I posted today, a distinguished design historian wrote me to suggest that I see what response I get to a comparable question. I am asking this question now. Because I will be leaving on a two-week trip on Saturday, I would like any replies by 5 pm on Friday, August 31. (That’s 5 pm in Sweden, Central European Summer Time.)
Here is my question:
Do people from an art and design background avoid posting to the PhD-Design list because they are afraid of being attacked or treated disrespectfully by people from a background in the scientific or technical disciplines?
I am now undertaking a confidential poll to see if anyone from an art and design background avoids posting to the list for this reason.
If you come from an art or design background and you avoid posting to the list for fear of personal attacks from people in the traditional science and technology disciplines, I would like to hear from you. This includes people in design history and the humanities.
In your reply, please let me know who you are, describe your background, and tell me what you do now. This information will remain confidential. I will gather the cumulative data and post it to the list late on Friday, August 31.
If you want to write a statement about why you avoid posting to the list, I will include your statement while protecting your identity.
Yours,
Ken
