Hi all
A couple of people have recently kindly used an email command to suspend delivery of messages from the GEM list, probably because they are going away for while.
Both people used the CORRECT email command, which is:
Set GEM nomail
[incidentally, you send this as the message itself, not the title, and without anything else in it.
For example my signature below, and all of this explanation I am writing now, would confuse things.
So send ONLY THE COMMAND ITSELF in your message. The title of the email doesn’t matter at all. ]
_BUT_ both of them send the command to the wrong email address. (No harm done - just don’t do it again!)
Email commands like this should be sent to this address:
[log in to unmask]
For those who are still reading this email (don't you have anything better to do?) and want to know more then there is more info here:
https://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/help/subscribers/subscribercommands.html
Also, at the end of every message you receive _from_ the GEM list, there is some text - have a look right at the bottom of this email - to help you use the three most common commands:
1. how to join the GEM list (Email command: join GEM Firstname Secondname_
2. how to stop emails coming while you are away (Email command: set gem nomail)
3. how to change the email address for your GEM list subscription (see below for details)
Two things you might not know (this is really getting interesting now...!) about the Set GEM nomail command:
1. It will avoid having to delete lots of emails when you get back - obvious really, that's probably why most people use it.
2. But it is also a 'good thing to do', because f you set an automatic 'out of office' response when you go away, then that auto-response often gets sent to the GEM list, which is mildly annoying, to nearly 2000 people - so worth considering.
3. As with all email commands, it doesn’t matter whether you use upper or lower case. Just make sure there is no other text in the email - just the command itself.
4. You can still see all the messages you 'missed' at any time. This web page has all the GEM list messages going back years:
https://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/lists/GEM.html
So in the end I got so excited about this that I gave you 4 (FOUR) interesting things instead of two - my personal homage to the 'What did the Romans ever do for us?' comedy routine. I'd like to think mine has the edge actually, in terms of actual usefulness.
I hope you're enjoying the summer. (I'm on holiday and need a break from the beach - hence the expansive email.)
As always, if you need any help, just email me directly, or follow the link to [log in to unmask] and I will get back to you as soon as I can.
Best
Martin
