Hi Liz,
I am one of the DSOs at the Horniman Museum and Gardens. In 2016 we did some focused work on our structures for safeguarding. We have a designated senior manager, seven named DSOs and a safeguarding working group who meet quarterly to review any incidents and ensure our updated policy and procedure is effective and rolled out across the organisation, always a work in progress. The working group has representatives from Learning, Volunteering, HR, Visitor Experience, Estates and the senior management team.
I strongly feel it isn't sustainable or reasonable for just one individual in an organisation to carry all the responsibility you describe, even with external support. An internal working group has the potential to build a shared sense of responsibility and provide colleagues with multiple points of access to safeguarding advice.
I'm also happy to talk off list and participate if an informal cross-museum safeguarding group feels timely.
Best wishes,
Georgina

Dear Liz,
I am the museum's safeguarding officer. As with you, I am responsible for the policies, procedures and training as well as DBS checks and referrals.
Having someone else to talk to about these things would be great. Count me in!
Best wishes,
Claire

Subject: Safeguarding
Hello all,
I am the Designated Safeguarding Lead for my Museum, and I look after all areas today with Safeguarding, including policy, procedure, day to day requirements, safer recruitment and DBS, for both children and vulnerable adults.
Does anyone else have there responsibilities in there organisation? Is there a 'Museum Safeguarding' group anywhere which gets together at talks about all things safeguarding?
It would be great to talk to some people in the same boat!
Thanks
Liz
