Hi Esra,
Thank you for your message.
My concern was the what top me seems to be an over-claiming that aesthetics is the main element in design work.
One might claim that the iPhone(say) gains advantage from its aesthetic design.
However the iPhone is dead in the water as a product without the engineering design that wakes it work and that comprises at least 100 times as much design activity as the aesthetic design.
Just trying to put aesthetics in its place in design activity as a whole – around 1%. Certainly it is higher if one only focuses on a tiny area of the whole design activity – but that is the same for all design fields.
Warm regards,
Terry

Subject: Re: Design and aesthetics
Dear Terence,
Thank you for elaborating what you mean by design work.
I am not really in the position of defending arts and aesthetics over design work or problem solving process.
I'm just trying to contribute to the ground of the discussion; being critical of the reductive views of aesthetics.
However I feel a reservation and resistance towards seeing aesthetics concept as a holistic one. But instead, associating it with just the form design or creating a style.
I will try with your list
Material design (design of chemical composition of Gorilla glass, aluminium alloys etc): no barrier being Related with aesthetics
Structural design to avoid it breaking and bending: no barrier being Related with aesthetics
Design of software codes: related with aesthetics: no barrier being Related with aesthetics
Design of software languages: no barrier being related with aesthetics
Design of hard drives: no barrier being related with aesthetics
Design of memory chips: no barrier being related with aesthetics
Design of electronic communication systems: no barrier being related with aesthetics
Design of visual display chips: no barrier being related with aesthetics
Design of touch systems: no barrier being related with aesthetics
Design of security systems: no barrier being related with aesthetics
Design of the structure and coding of the iOS operating system: no barrier being related with aesthetics
Design of wireless systems. no barrier being related with aesthetics
Design of telephony systems: no barrier being related with aesthetics
Design of manufacturing processes: no barrier being related with aesthetics
Design or robot assembly processes: no barrier being related with aesthetics
Design of packaging machinery: no barrier being related with aesthetics
So on.. Also the cases you mention in your ph.d. thesis. I think same is valid with them.
Kind regards,
Esra.
