Hi Alun,
Having PhD research being Industry-linked is really helpful.
Especially for the creative industries and even more so for creative experimental output.
A challenge for design departments in universities is to put the time and effort into developing the appropriate industry-linkages for creative design research.
It is clear, however, that many areas of industry are open to being involved in such PhD research and are open to communication and negotiation.
I'm happy from my own business to engage with one or more of your PhD students.
Warm regards,
Terry

Subject: Industry based PhDs
Dear List members
I am looking for input to help me frame a discussion that I would like to have in a university forum. I have been attending training sessions for principal supervisors and have seen the drive toward industry linked PhDs, with an emphasis on applied research. As someone who values practice based creative research I am concerned that this move will kill off creative practice. It is already very difficult to get exhibitions recognized as research outputs.
Driving this seems to be a directive from the Australian Government's funding body that funding will, from 2018, be based on industry engagement. This has led to a proposal that PhDs should have a workplace component.
As part of the supervisors accreditation program here I have an opportunity to give a short presentation on any relevant aspect of supervision. I will be using it to discuss the effect of industry linked research on the less focussed, more experimental possibilities.
If anyone has a comment on this I would welcome their perspectives, even if it reveals that my concerns are in the minority.
Kind regards
Alun Price
