Hi Allan
Thanks for coordinating responses on this.
I am not sure whether web-based case studies are necessarily the best approach in this case, although I have no preference either way.
Some advantages of having web-based case studies are:
1. you can make links within and between case studies
2. you can access it wherever you like
3. you could print it off in different sized text, colours for better contrast etc
4. cheaper than large print runs
5. in principle you can update, for amendments and additions
Etc
Against:
1. not everyone has good or continuous web access
2. many people find they can concentrate better on long-form articles printed on good quality paper
3. (can't remember what this reason was...)
But for me the key point is that, to actually make good use of the interlinking aspects of web-based case studies, a lot of skilled editing work is required, and it is only really useful if a consistent approach is taken over the years. Many organisations have tried to do this, and I cannot think of an instance where this has been sustained, essentially because people don't the time, expertise, or move jobs, priorities change etc. So while technologically it is pretty easy to do this kind of thing on the web, in practical terms it rarely works well.
One thing I imagine would be make case studies and other GEM articles on the website searchable. I think there is a list of JEM article titles there, but it would be much more effective to have a search (and perhaps browsable by topic/keyword). Again though it boils down to time to do this.
Hope that's useful
Best
Martin
