Greetings GEM list members!
I am organising an event in a secondary school in Hackney, London on the 20th January and we are looking for volunteers from a wide range of career sectors to support us. I thought this might interest some of you working in the museums sector in London or those looking to gain experience of working with secondary students.
Event
Custom Made, a one day enterprise programme working with students in school to develop their employability skills and awareness.
Timings
Friday 20th January, 8.30am - 3pm
Audience
Year 8 students at Clapton Girls' Academy, Hackney
Objectives of the day
The students will work in teams to create their own fashion brand and design products to sell before pitching their ideas to a panel at the end of the day. The day aims to develop students' employability skills including communication, teamwork and financial management. It will also give them an understanding of how a business works and build their confidence in meeting and talking to professionals from outside school.
Volunteer role
Volunteers will work in teams of 2-4 to help facilitate the activities in the classroom. There will be 1.5 hour training session before the day to introduce the activities and how to facilitate them.
Who are we looking for?
You don't need any experience of working with young people and we welcome volunteers from any career sector. We are keen to show how the skills needed to run a business are similar to those needed in any working environment. However this opportunity might be of particular interest to you if you:
*are a business entrepreneur
*work in graphic design
*work in branding and marketing
*work in the creative industries
*have experience giving presentations and pitching
*have experience of product development
*have experience working in or an interest in fashion and design
What is in it for you?
This is a chance for you to
* Share your experience of work and your career pathway to raise the aspirations of young people and help them in considering their own career options.
* Support students in developing their employability skills and share your expertise and experience of using them in the workplace.
* Gain experience and skills in working with young people in a secondary school
If you are interested in taking part or want to know more, please get in touch and I will send more information. [log in to unmask]
