Dear Luiza
The launch of your platform is of interest to me, like Ken I would like the opportunity to read the papers that you (the group) have written. The subject of power as a part of design and the design process is an area of research that I am interested in and currently developing my Phd proposal around. For me the interest lies in the area of people who are on the fringes or marginalized within “society” in particular people with disability.
The lively debate that this post has triggered further emphasizes the importance of open discussion about design and its significance to the world; past, present and future. I do not confess in any way to be of the academic prowess of those who contribute to this thread. However, like others I find it intriguing the reaction to you post. If empathy is to be a cornerstone of design, then so to should be the recognition of the concept of power that exists within design and the design process. My Phd is giving consideration to the idea of design for, design with and design by and in our striving for ‘equality’ there are struggles and agents of power to be considered and recognised.
I would hope that in the spirit of your endeavour that you would allow researchers and students from countries possibly considered westernised/colonial (Australia) to be able contribute and participate. I look forward to reading and hearing more.
Regards
Russell Thom

Subject: Launching the Decolonising Design platform
Dear list members,
Today Pedro Oliveira, Mahmoud Keshavarz, Danah Abdulla, Ece Canli, Matt Kiem, Tristan Schultz and I are proud to announce the launch of the Decolonising Design <http://www.decolonisingdesign.com/> platform.
This platform is our response to an almost complete failure, in the field of design studies, to address the systemic problems emerging from the colonial conditions that inform knowledge production and validation. It is our way to offer an alternative space for the many designers who work at the fringes, whose voices and concerns are systematically marginalised by a largely Anglocentric and Eurocentric design tradition. It is a place to discuss strategies and tactics through which to engage with mainstream discourse, and to postulate alternatives and reformulations of contemporary practice. This is our Editorial Statement: http://www.decolonisingdesign.com/general/2016/editorial/ <http://www.decolonisingdesign.com/general/2016/editorial/>
Today is also the first day of the Design Research Conference. The creation of this platform was, in part, triggered by the rejection, on clearly political grounds, of a paper five of us submitted which discussed some of these issues. You can read our full statement concerning the urgent need for a redirection of the colonial ethos of design and design research here: http://www.decolonisingdesign.com/general/2016/drs2016statement/ <http://www.decolonisingdesign.com/general/2016/drs2016statement/>
For now, this platform takes the shape of a blog; we are opening it for researchers, students and practitioners from the Global South to submit their work and to use it as a space for fruitful discussion and growth.
Best,
Luiza Prado
