Hello everyone

The Arts Council provides this guidance for applicants to the Grants for the Arts programme, "Paying Artists and Grants for the Arts", on page 3 of this web page: http://www.artscouncil.org.uk/advice-sheets-1

It says:

2 Paying artists, and Grants for the Arts

Arts Council England is committed to ensuring proper and fair payment to artists and those who work in the creative industries is in recognition of their professional status, skills and experience.

Applicants to Grants for the Arts should make sure they can provide proper and fair payments to all the artists they will be working with.

2.1 Daily rates

Following a ruling by the Office of Fair Trading on competition law, we are not able to provide suggest rates of pay for artists.

Applicants should consider the National Minimum Wage <https://www.gov.uk/national-minimum-wage/who-gets-the-minimum-wage> and National Living Wage <http://www.livingwage.gov.uk>

www.livingwage.gov.uk <http://www.livingwage.gov.uk>

Applicants should also ensure that the Artists’ fees for Grants for the arts funded activities are in line with recognised codes of practice set by the relevant lead bodies. Where union rates exist, we expect at least the minimum rate to be applied.

You can find details of some of these organisations in section 3 ‘Further information <> ’ of this sheet.

The key sentence is " Following a ruling by the Office of Fair Trading on competition law, we are not able to provide suggest rates of pay for artists."

Best wishes

Nicola

Hi everyone
Thanks for this Nicola. Interesting reading, particularly useful to share with clients developing budgets for grant applications.

I wonder how much this is shaped by the hlf unskilled/skilled/professional in-kind rates and wonder if the Arts Council and other funders have similar published rates. Does anyone know?

Thanks Yvonne

This is sent from my mobile, so please excuse the brevity and any mis-typings! Thank you.

Hello everyone

Thank you very much to everyone for the 41 responses and 9 emails about the consultants' and freelancers' daily rates survey. As promised, I am reporting back to the lists (GEM, GEM Freelance Network, Visitor Studies Group) – please see the report attached.

There is a lot of strength of feeling in the responses, that consultants and freelancers provide a very high level of skill and expertise to cultural heritage organisations, without which many projects would not take place, as consultants and freelancers bring additional capacity to organisations as well as skills and expertise. Very many cultural heritage projects are a three-way partnership between the cultural heritage organisation (the client), the funder and the consultant / freelancer.

Many of the respondents feel that clients do not fully recognise the costs which consultants and freelancers incur in running their businesses, and so project budgets do not always allow an adequate amount for consultants'/freelancers' work. As so many cultural heritage projects are funded by various grant-making organisations, the grant makers should ensure that the sums allowed for consultants and freelancers are realistic, in the same way as costs for equipment, construction, etc. This will help consultants and freelancers continue to deliver high quality services to the cultural heritage sector.

This survey, although limited, has given an idea of the range of daily rates which consultants and freelancers charge for various tasks and flagged up some of the issues which affect them in running their businesses. It's a "toe in the water" and someone else – an organisation, perhaps? – might like to consider taking this further.

Best wishes

Nicola

Hi,

Thanks for mentioning DHG – I’m just working on the schedule for 2016 & 2017 which will be sent out soon.

I did organise a meeting at Hackney Museum on the theme of refugees, and will be organising another one this year (anyone want to host that?) –

I’ve worked with refugees, asylum seekers and migrants for over 20 years as a consultant for museums, but also as an advisor for UNHCR, Save the Children and other international NGOs in the field (based in refugee camps) –

If anyone would be interested in presenting a case study, hosting a DHG meeting, or running a participatory workshop on working with refugee communities then please let me know! I will also be putting out a call for engaging through archives soon – so if anyone is interested please contact me.

Thanks all!

Poppy

Subject: Shop

Hi Gemmers,

Most of our schools workshops take place in non public venues in most cases in another building (where we don't have a shop). We tell teachers at planning meetings that we have a shop full of pocket money items and that we can also prepare goody bags.

However, despite these 'notices' schools rarely visit our shop. Most of our workshops are two hours long and schools that just stay for a morning often run off quickly. However, many schools do a half day led activity with us and then spend the other half a day wandering round the museum and doing self-led activities. They have ample time to visit the shop. However, they rarely do.

When I was a child visiting the shop on a school trip was a highlight and I see it in other places. However, I know that it can be a pain for teachers managing a gaggle of children and their money. So my question is, how do you make a trip to the shop an essential part of a trip to your venue and how do you drive secondary spend in this way?

Thanks

Trudie

Hi everyone,

We are doing a 'Ghost Stories' family event, with costumed
interpretation around our historic house. Has anyone done something like
this before and has a script that we could have a look at, or any
advice?

Yours sincerely,

Michelle

Hi Michelle

Can¹t share our script but from a diversity perspective happy to throw in
Caribbean folk tales as a suggestion Trinidad and Tobago¹s spirits and
traditional ghost stories for starters (great for fancy dress and a natural
segue into carnival)
