Hi all
With my ex-Unemployment Unit hat on - maybe we can name it after the 31 changes to the claimant count (in the 1980s)?
The attempted rebuttal by the Employment department is still available from the UK data service as documentation for the JUVOS dataset: http://doc.ukdataservice.ac.uk/doc/3721/mrdoc/pdf/3721userguide.pdf

I think that if we want it to be Radical Statistics badged, rather than simply RSS, it should ideally go beyond simply identifying what’s bad, and also focus on instances where stats have been used to:
a) Mislead large sections of the non-statistics community – so socially important
b) Present (misleading) arguments in support of non-radical agendas
This would enable us to tie it back to Radstats in terms of the organisations focus on statistics as empowering community groups and others and promoting radical social change.
Best, Rachel.

Subject: Proposed RadStats annual "Bad Stats" Award
Dear All
I have been volunteered to try and develop the proposal that RadStats should offer an annual "'Bad Stats' Award".
What do you think?
So far the aims and characteristics of the award have not been defined, but I see them as including the following:
1. To highlight the importance of statistics in public discourse
2. To stress the importance of doing statistics 'widely and well'
3. To raise the profile of RadStats (maybe along with the RSS?)
4. To organise a fun, photographable ceremony at which BadStats awards will be presented to the winners. (As with the IgNoble Prize, this may be in absentia, but we can work around that.)
As you will realise, the intentions of this email are perfectly serious. However, please feel free to be humourous AND serious in your reply. In particular, what should the award be? (If not an 'Oscar', maybe a 'Claus'? Or even a 'Harold' in honour of Harold Wilson).
I welcome your advice on how and whether to proceed.
JOHN BIBBY
