I don't think you can have predictive text in the location bar, but not everyone types URLs straight in, they might make a note first. It's an edge case but I did say 'if'!
If the Google translation app can live-detect and translate text between languages I'm sure software can figure out URLs and make them clickable!

I do think a lot of it is about the desire you’ve given that person to follow the link. If it’s 20% off in the cafe, they’ll probably go further than if the incentive isn’t that good.

What’s interesting I think is that if a big vendor - say Apple - said “if you take a photo with the standard camera app and we detect a QR code in it, we’ll give you the option to click on it”, the whole thing would turn around overnight…

It's not a shortened URL vs QR code thing - most people are used to posting on social media or writing texts, so they're probably OK with typing on a mobile keyboard. If they have predictive text on for typing URLs it's actually much harder to type shortened words.

Have a little card with a QR code and a short URL on it (and SMS shortcode as well!) - but whatever you do, put unique Google Analytics campaign parameters on all the approaches - that way you’ll be able to gather loads of evidence either way - and can you then share with the group please? :-)
