This Saturday, December 5 will be exactly 200 years to the day since George Stephenson announced the invention of the worlds first practical mine safety lamp to a packed meeting of the Newcastle Literary and Philosophical Society (the 'Lit & Phil’).
The Lit & Phil is still going strong, still in the building Geordie Stephenson knew, 23 Westgate Street Newcastle, by the Central Station.
So this Saturday from 09:90 am to 5:00 pm there’s a family day at the Lit & Phil, celebrating the bicentenary of Stephenson’s invention.
I’ll be there, presenting a short science shows throughout the day about how Stephenson (and Davy) set about inventing safety lamps, there’ll be historical talks about ‘wor Geordie’, too, hands on experiments by ‘Think Physics’, and a free evening talk by Prof. Frank James from the Royal Institution.
More details can be found here:http://www.litandphil.org.uk/whats-on/2015/dec/family-open-day-celebrating-george-stephenson/
See you on Saturday in Newcastle?
