COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT: The Real Thing
10am – 4pm, 7th March 2015
The Lightbox, Woking Surrey, GU21 4AA
A one-day seminar on effective approaches to community engagement
The day will draw upon the experience of The Lightbox of having taken part in the Our Museum 3-year national community engagement programme funded by Paul Hamlyn Foundation. The focus will be particularly upon the ‘Starting from Zero’ approach.
Through a series of case studies and workshops we will set out to explore a number of key questions around community engagement:
• What are local communities, what are local assets?
• When is community engagement active collaboration and when is it ‘community engagement light’?
• Should community engagement be the preserve of one department or should it be the concern of the whole organisation? And if the latter, how can that be made to happen?
• In practical terms, how should we go about community engagement?
• How do we measure success and how do we communicate the impact?
There will be opportunities for discussion and debate throughout the day.
The seminar is intended for professionals and volunteers who wish to strengthen their understanding of the theory and practice of community engagement in the context of museum and gallery work.
The day will be run by the Community Engagement Team (a mix of staff and community partners) at The Lightbox.
