Dear Francois,
I was away for last two days and thus could not reply earlier! The queries
require a long mail!
I am Pramod Khadilkar, I am doing my PhD under NWO funded collaborative
project, 'Technology and Human Development: A Capability Approach'. I am a
product designer by education. I have more than 7 years of Design
experience in Industry. You can find the details about this project at:

Within the scope of this project which tries to understand 'How technology
and design can contribute to Human Development, when viewed through the
normative evaluative framework of Capability Approach'. There are
philosophical and ethical approaches to design and technology which were
dealt by a different PhD (Ms. Ilse Oosterlaken). While two designers,
myself and Ms. Annemarie Mink are working on improving design for the
purpose of Human development.
This research uniquely started with asking the most fundamental normative
question is, ' What is Human Development?'. As that is the goal of Design
for Development. Due to goal oriented, purposeful nature of design, the
scope and conception of Development guides the DfD.
My PhD specifically tried to answer questions: 1) How to conceptualize
design success for DfD? 2) Is current design (Both theory and practice)
able to support this conception? 3) How designers practice DfD? (The survey
is linked with it) 4) What additional methodologies, methods are necessary
for DfD? (Part of the survey will be used for this)
As a outcome of my research I am extending the Human centered design
approach to design by adding the normative approach of Capability approach.
The outcome of my work is a Capability approach based design methodology
for DfD. This methodology is situated in current design practice and thus
use the process and nomenclature of design practice.
For this I have worked on a case study of Cook stoves, have visited field
and stayed with the final beneficiaries. You can see some of my work in my
profiles below:

I will be happy to answer any further queries!
I again request you to support my work by answering the following survey:
Understanding Design for Development! (Survey link -

Few clarifications before you start:
1) This survey takes around 20 to 30 minutes to complete.
2) Having a formal design education in Design is 'NOT' a prerequisite,
however involvement in design activity targeted towards underprivileged
poor population is necessary.
Regards,
Pramod
