Hi Terence,
Thank you for the contribution.
I know a part of French’s work. I am using his Conceptual Design for
Engineers (London: Design Council, 1985) to write a chapter on conceptual
design phase in a forthcoming book on design processes. However, I don’t
know this specific work and now I am curious… I will read it.
To use conceptual design so early in the design process (as you wrote,
before any brainstorming or idea generation about specific designs) is very
significant for speculative design approach.
This use seems to be similar to the one described by Anthony Dunne in
Hertzian Tales (Cambridge: The MIT Press, 2008), even if Dunne’s work is
not committed to the development of new products, but the exploration of
alternative scenarios through concepts and prototypes.
In this direction, we could stress a third use of these types of metadesign
tools, strictly related to the DUXU conference: the possibility of
envisioning alternatives for the future, rather than anticipating possible
futures.
Best wishes,
Carlo
