If only there were diacritics for sarcasm, the João/Yoad exchange might have been eliminated. . . Well, maybe it would have ended up looking a bit like Vietnamese.
João’s joking reference to MS Word and writers is interesting in a discussion of the effects of software on designers. The advent of PageMaker, et al, brought on a tsunami of angst among graphic designers. After years of whining that nobody understood what we do ("not even my own mother"), we got to complain that everybody thought they were graphic designers because they had a computer and some stolen software. (For some reason, all those people were not just fraudulently representing their skills and/or proper titles but also involved in mass copyright infringement.)
I have known writers to point out that they have spent years honing the craft of writing about stuff like design and any designer who manages to complete a magazine article declares himself to be a design writer. For the most part, however, screenwriters don’t complain that journalists and advertising copywriters aren’t "real" writers and academic writers don’t worry that we’ll be unemployed because footnotes are, thanks to computer technology, so much faster and easier now than they were a few years ago. It seems likely to me that Karel’s hopes for enhanced writing software will come before sociology checkers in design software but I share his embrace of both ideas.
As to users, words that get past spellcheck software and bad PowerPoint slideshows may be irksome but try to remember the world of unrestrained misspelling and completely unstructured talks. As the PSAs tell us, it gets better.
