Dear David
Thanks for this. Perhaps the criteria needs to be clarified.
Following my inquiry, I was also told that there were "other things" needed, and that even if I submitted publications in "design journals" there was little chance of success.
I left it there, bewildered and wondering what those "other things" were and was on the verge of feeling that since the process was so arbitrary, perhaps I should not take the Fellowship too seriously.
Of course, this rant seems like sour grapes, but honestly the experience of being directed to design journals, and then later to be asked to supply other unknowns felt like I was being thrown about for fun.
But now seeing your response below, I am comforted to know that there is progressive and fairminded thinking at the leadership of the field.
Also I noticed I've started off something between Terry and Ken, and I hope that settles down quickly. I appreciate Terry picking up some of my points. I would agree that we ought to recognize professionals outside of universities, if they produce good work, of course. We have professionals who do professional doctorates and they write very good dissertations, and their professional experience helps them identify important issues which fall through the cracks in academic literature.
Jude

Dear Jude
Your note about design journals and DRS Fellowship got me out of my slumber on this list. Without knowing either exactly what question you asked or how it was interpreted, it's impossible for me to know why you got the answer that you did, and I cannot deal with that here. It is certainly true that DRS Fellowship assessors would expect research contributions to made in design. Applications for FDRS are considered in the round so, in my estimation, a good track record of publication of original research related to design should be seen favourably by assessors. An application would have to demonstrate competence in research in design, but DRS generally interprets design broadly.
In my judgement it is completely misguided to attempt to classify journals for 'design', as though design were a hermetically sealed environment. Even worse, attempting to rank those journals in some order of importance represents the worst kind of academic control-freakery.
Who is to say that research in 'design' must be limited to design journals (whatever they may be)? And if it is not limited to design journals, then why should we take account of whether the work is directly reported within design circles or not? It is the quality of the work that matters, not where it appears.
Details of FDRS may be found at http://www.designresearchsociety.org/joomla/become-fellow.html. All are very welcome to apply!
Kind regards
David
