Before you can say what the benefits are, you have to define what the
job roles are.
However, if there is a clinical role involving seeing patients /
treating them, and thereby generating an income, then that defines the
job as a medical one because prescribing rights are essential. Aiso, if
seeing patients is part of the role, then this tends to favour a medical
appointment because it is possible to make more money in clinical income
for the Trust than the cost of employing a medical consultant - who can
still have laboratory functions for the rest of their time - thus
effectively allowing the Trust to get the senior lab management role for
free...

Subject: Medical cf Non-Medical Clinical Biochemistry
Dear All
I've been asked to put together a document on the relative benefits of
employing a Consultant Chemical Pathologist (Medically Trained) and a
Consultant Biochemist (non-Medical).
Has anyone out there any experience of producing such a document? Any
examples?
What clinics or other clinical services do medics / non-medics carry out
in other institutions?
Any help much appreciated.
Michael
