Dear Jo,
At the Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford we have been giving out torches for a number of years. We do late night openings where we turn off the lights and give everyone torches (1,400 people a couple of weeks ago). We have tried many different approaches, and we think we have finally found a system that works for us. We buy ours from Emblem Print and get our logo on them, they are the ones that you press rather than wind. We charge £3 for a brand new boxed torch, but we also loan them for free. If someone borrows them we ask for a £2 deposit. About 40% of people fail to give them back, but they are second hand torches and at £2 we still make a profit so we are quite happy with the situation.
We have looked at binoculars but haven’t found anything that works well at a cheap price, so would be interested to know if anyone else has.
Best wishes,
Andy
