The BIG Event, taking place 22-24 July in Norwich at the John Innes Centre will be the same as it ever is, but a bit different. As ever.
The BIG Event has been running since 1997 and is the highlight of science communicators' calendars. If you want to rub along with 150+ people in the business of public engagement with the sciences in the hope that support, ideas and professional relationships will rub off, then join us.
It is a three-day conference with a friendly atmosphere, promoting sharing of ideas in the most informal way we can make it. It’s great for those at the coal face of promoting science, technology, engineering, maths to publics of all kinds. There is an emphasis on professional development and knowledge exchange for people like (but not only) - presenters of shows and workshops, education officers, evaluators, exhibit and prop builders. Plus all the people in support organisations - learned societies, museums, discovery and science centres, funding institutions, science festivals, exhibition developers…
The John Innes Centre has some great spaces for us to make our own visitor experience atmosphere – and BIG Event delegates have risen to the challenge to create a mini-exhibition during the conference. JIC has fabulous research facilities, at which we will be able to have a good nosey. http://jic.ac.uk/
This year’s BIG Event programme includes:
- Science on the One Show, on YouTube and outside in the sunshine
- Cardboard creations, musical creations, cutting edge creations and crushing creativity
- How to play with fire, train people and dissect stuff (don’t mix these up)
- Lots of scope to develop your presentation content, your presenting style and your online presence
THE BIG Event will also be hosting the UK Science Festivals Network for their summer meeting and we hope this brings opportunities for you to promote your festival-friendly wares. http://www.britishscienceassociation.org/uk-science-festivals-network
The BIG Event really is a good place to meet other professionals in the STEM Engagement field in a warm and friendly environment. It’s a good place to find ideas for content, for jobs, for funding, for collaborations. Who knows, you might even find your life partner. It takes place Wed 22 – Fri 24 July and this year you can book your overnight accommodation when you register for a delegate place.
