medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Greetings all!
I know that there is a very old volume in which the calendars of various churches in the vicinity of Cologne are published, and intend to go searching for it. I wonder, however, if there is a study of the relics in Cologne?
The Three Kings, Ursula and Companions, and Theban Legion probably take pride of place, but who else is there? I have been thinking about relic list that has been in Norway (published by Norton, Christopher, „Archbishop Eystein, King Magnus and the Copenhagen Psalter – A New Hypothesis,“ K. Bjørlykke, Øystein Ekroll, B. Syrstad Gran and M. Herman (eds), Eystein Erlendsson - Erkebiskop, politiker og Kirkebygger (Trondheim: Nidaros Domkirkes Restaureringsarbeiders forlag, 2012), pp. 184-214. Good luck on finding this book, which as far as I have found on line can be purchased from the Cathedral shop at Nidaros (now Trondheim), but contains several articles that would be of interest to this list, many of them, however, in Norwegian, though his one, and those by Anne Duggan, Stuart Harrison, and Lars Boje Mortensen, are in English.) While I am unlikely to top Norton´s analysis of the relic list, I have become curious to know about the development of relic cults in Cologne. Also, of course, art in the churches, also a good indication of devotion. Does anyone have any suggestions for bibliography?
Meg
