medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Not that I have found. I wish there were. Probably because less has survived in Norway.
For Iceland (where even less has survived, mostly statues of the BVM and a few altarpieces and statues of St. Olaf) see the national museum of Iceland and go to SARPUR - or, better yet, go straight to www.sarpur.is
You can see all the images, but it is my recollection that there is nothing there in English. Also they include lots of photographs of items they do not actual hold (I seem to recall one or two famous Irish reliquaries) and that can be confusing.

Meg, is there a similar site for Norway?

They are sometimes found alongside the 11,000 virgins. Could any of the other illustrations depict them? Also, Anders, even if you can't show the actual pictures, can you find similar ones on line? As I'm sure you know Danish and Swedish altarpieces and murals can be searched at

I figured the best way to solve the riddle would be to go to the MR Sendlist, for help, which is what I hereby do.

>> 2) The upper right square shows a ship with a bishop, a king and a pope, and three more men, all beardless. The ship is nearing land, but being shot at from land by a man with a bow (no arrow is visible). At the other end, another man holds a rope and is probably towing the ship to land.
>>
>> 3) The lower left square shows a bishop (on top) and six other men pierced on bushes with huge thorns. All are beardless. Two men are next to naked. The others have ordinary (not clerical) clothes. Another man is in the background, holding a spear (?).
>>
>> 4) The lower right square shows one person, beardless, with a cape, who is to be decapitated, another, tonsured (a deacon?), already decapitated on the ground, some men looking on, one of which is an official with beard, hat, and cape. Uniquely for this image, there are two or three women (virgins) depicted. They are prisoners.
