Deal GEMlist members,
Our Museum is currently working on a new permanent exhibition on the science and technology of food, to open at end of April 2015. It will narrate the story of food, from eating to producing, focusing specifically on the role of science, technology and research and using historical objects, interactive exhibits, photos, videos.
One of the interpretation tools we chose is life-size videos of people talking about aspects of the story. Visitors will enter the exhibition and will 'meet' people (everyday people engaged in eating situations in the past or the present, researchers, peasants, artisans etc.) talking to them in first person, for example about who they are or about what they do, or about what visitors find around them in the exhibition. This choice helps us emphasise the human aspect of the topic, and at the same time creates a stimulus for visitors to approach a specific exhibit and engage with it. In some cases, we might even want to replace text entirely.
Can you suggest examples of exhibitions that have used a similar approach? Or references of papers and studies?
We are now studying all aspects of this choice, from contents to relationship with visitors, to distraction from noise caused by more than one videos of people talking at the same time. Looking into other cases can be very helpful to us.
Thank you in advance for your time and help.
Best regards
