Professor in Design

Type of employment: Fixed-term employment, 5-year fixed-term position with the possibility of extension
Extent: 100 %
Location: School of Design and Crafts, Gothenburg
First day of employment: as soon as possible
Reference number: PER 2014/396

In conjunction with the new PARSE artistic research platform, the three Academies of artistic practice at the University of Gothenburg – the Academy of Music and Drama, the Valand Academy of Fine Arts and the HDK-School of Design and Crafts – are recruiting new professors to further develop their unique artistic research environments. The University of Gothenburg was the first in Sweden to develop the doctorate through artistic research, and has actively promoted the international dialogue on the future of artistic research and artistic research education, generating a radically new context for experimental enquiry through artistic practices. The role of the new PARSE Professor in each academy will therefore be to work collaboratively to enhance an already vibrant research milieu by bringing new energies, thought leadership and a renewed experimental approach to research development.

PARSE is an international art and research publishing and conferencing initiative jointly realised by the three academies that comprise the Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts at the University. PARSE generates major international research conferences, a peer-reviewed research journal (print and online), and promotes new artistic research initiatives. PARSE provides a forum for dialogue between artistic researchers and researchers from other domains and disciplines. PARSE seeks to stimulate an innovative multidisciplinary research culture in the arts (including music, performing arts, art, design, architecture, literature, film and media) www.parsejournal.com/<http://www.parsejournal.com/>.

Designing creative and critically secured research environments within the department’s subject areas (Design, Crafts and Teacher Education) is one of the School of Design and Crafts (HDK) all-encompassing goals – in an effort to enhance the quality of research, and hereby enable and strengthen competitiveness both nationally and internationally. The School of Design and Crafts (HDK) are also working proactively to create strong and successful research and doctoral (third-cycle) education. The development of research guided by cross-disciplinary encounters between Design, Crafts and Teacher Education, as well as exchange between the Faculty, the University of Gothenburg and the wider community, is a question of significant strategic importance for HDK.

As part of this strategy HDK seeks a professor with a background in the arts towards design, internationally renowned, and with a strong research profile, based in design but in dialogue with craft and pedagogy. Within Design there is particular commitment to research and education with a particular focus on social sustainability and the interaction with society. Of importance is also the integration of research and education.
