Hello all,
Happy Friday!
I'm looking for some recommendations for speakers for a lecture series that we will be running at Morley College from September. I was wondering if anyone has worked with some particularly engaging speakers, or been along to a really interesting talk recently?
The series we are organising is a revival of the Penny Lectures that led to the establishment of Morley College 125 years ago. There is a bit of background information below and any suggestions would be very welcome!
About the Penny Lectures:
Morley College grew from a series of ‘Penny Lectures’ at the Old Vic Theatre in Waterloo, London. These began in 1882 and included talks about a wide range of subjects of current interest at the time, such as ‘Why is the Sea Salty?’ and ‘The telephone: how to talk to a man a 100 miles away’. Topics were chosen to encourage new thinking and ideas and provided illustrated lectures at affordable prices…a penny! The lectures were a huge success and quickly developed into evening classes and the establishment of ‘Morley Memorial College’ for Working Men and Women.
Today Morley welcomes over 12,000 adult students a year who take part in wide range of classes covering art, design and fashion, the performing arts, humanities, health, languages and essential skills.
2014/15 is a celebratory year for Morley as we reach the milestone of our 125th anniversary. As part of our celebrations we plan to celebrate our past and revive the Penny Lecture series for a new generation of adults to learn from and be inspired by.
I look forward to hearing from you!
Kind regards
Hannah
