medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
The Musée départemental des Antiquités de la Seine-Maritime in Rouen has a couple of polychromed misericords, from the now vanished église St.-Étienne-des-Tonneliers, dated to the late fifteenth or, more likely, early sixteenth century (the church was rebuilt between 1491 and 1533):

All the books I have and websites I have looked at have beautiful images showing off the loveliness of the wood in its natural state. In Martial Rose 'The Misericords of Norwich Cathedral' it is stated that it is unclear whether they were painted.I can't imagine that with the rest of the church being pretty much technicolour the misericords would have escaped, but I would like a definitive source. Grateful for any leads. Nicole
