medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Can anyone give me a clue/point me towards literature that will give
information on whether misericords were ever painted? All the books I
have and websites I have looked at have beautiful images showing off the
loveliness of the wood in its natural state. In Martial Rose 'The
Misericords of Norwich Cathedral' it is stated that it is unclear
whether they were painted.I can't imagine that with the rest of the
church being pretty much technicolour the misericords would have
escaped, but I would like a definitive source. Grateful for any leads.
