Dear terry,
Yep, "method" is often used prescriptively and predictively with good reason. The descriptive use is closer to the etymology - that is, method as an account of the journey undertaken, or an account of how the research was conducted to achieve a particular outcome. Skill (technique, phronesis) would comfortably fit inside a vivid descriptive account.
