Dear All,
There is one important set of design thinking materials I want to share with the list. I would have included these in a post, but I’ll send them as a standalone now.
This is a set of two important books on design thinking from Helsinki Design Lab (Boyer, Cook, and Steinberg, 2011 and 2013) and three case studies (Boyer and Cook, 2012a, 2012b, 2012c).
The books exemplify the concept that the HDL people call “legible practice.” The book are rich with how-to-make-it-work details and recipes for the HDL “in studio” approach.
These and the case studies give full details with comprehensive information that enables you to understand what happened in each case, why, what the participants learned, and how they thought things through.
The HDL Strategic Design group was unique. They functioned as a public service design thinking consultancy within SITRA, the Finnish Innovation Fund. As a public service organization, they functioned in a completely open environment. They had no need for confidentiality, and they were completely free with the skills and knowledge they developed.
HDL closed shop this year and folks moved on. Marco Steinberg went to Snow Cone and Haystack in Helsinki. He does strategic design work on large-scale social challenges such as sustainability, education, and healthcare, helping governments meet innovation challenges. Dan Hill went to Fabrica in Catena di Villorba in Italy. This is the research workshop, school, and studio created by Benetton. Bryan Boyer and Justin Cook work in design practices.
Helsinki Design Lab published these pioneering books and cases under a Creative Commons license. You’ll find all five in the “teaching documents” section of my Academia page:

If you want to learn how to work with design thinking in how-to-do-it detail while developing a robust theoretical framework, this is the place to begin.
Yours,
Ken
