Here is a summary of further information I received concerning Anywhere.me:
One library service with a population of a quarter million and 12 libraries
generated £4k a year.
On another point, another library service noted that the first half-dozen
entries in search results on Anywhere.me were sponsored results instead of
perhaps the first couple on a Google search. These sponsored results were
often completely irrelevant to the search and the screen design is so
subtle that most users would not realise the difference between these and
normal results.
Hope this is useful - many thanks to the individuals who responded to me.

Thanks to Phil for the further information.
I wonder if anyone is prepared to share how much income was generated for
their service through use of Anywhere.me, or any other portal? Clearly,
this can be sensitive information, and if it isn't possible to share
amounts, just an indication of "significant" or "insignificant" would be
useful.
As always, I am happy to share anonymised information with the list, if
this is OK with the service providing the information.

You might want to take a look at Netvibes.com which allows customised
home/start pages which can be shared. Dublin City Public Libraries uses
this resource for example. It's advertising free.

New to me, but a look at Anywhere.me indicates it is based on advertising
revenue which the company shares with the authority.
The users also seem to be able to customise the screens for themselves, so
I assume they sign up and login once they have a browser to get access to
that?
is there any equivalent which is *not* advertising based? No doubt
chargeable, and we'd lose a possible income stream, but we'd not be
throwing advertising at our users.
Can we use this type of hosted solution to 'whitelist' public PCs to lock
them down to our preferred sites?
Etc. etc.
Any ideas?

*Apologies for cross posting*
Hi all,
In Cheshire libraries we're using customised browser homepages and Google
search boxes for our public PCs, provided by anywhere.me.
I know that there are a lot of other Councils using anywhere.me, but I have
been asked to find out if anyone knows of any other companies that provide
a similar service?
Many thanks in advance,
Niall Rowe
