As a parent I have been fighting against cuts to the County Music Service here in Cardiff. So I was interested to see Gove's trumpeting of "Music Hubs" in England. As such I posted the story (rather over enthusiastically it turns out) on a couple of FB groups who are as concerned as I am about losing music lessons for children. The first reply I had back stated that the idea was rubbish as it is for whole-class teaching, only at KS2 and can't be delivered because of the number of redundancies that have already occurred in Music Service Departments across England.
So, nice try Gove. A+ for creativity, C- for commitment. Must work harder....
Also, with my work "hat" on (and it is a very nice one too..) yet again I am frustrated by the lack of a link between investment in children's learning and that of their parents. Ignore the link between parents and children and you set up to fail.

Oh dear! Where should I start? It's exactly what I feared when the Gove/ Vaizey think tank uttered its first words on their version of "culture".
Their trumpeted intention is in "opening the doors to rich cultural experiences ... what may be for many, the beginnings of a life-long enjoyment and appreciation of the arts.”
One definition of culture is: "The totality of socially transmitted behaviour patterns, arts, beliefs, institutions, and all other products of human work and thought".
So where in their "culture" does science sit?
In appendix A, Clare Tickell does include science "... literacy, mathematics, expressive arts and design, and understanding the world."
I have only skim read the document but that is the only mention of anything close to meeting my personal understanding of "culture".
Allowed to go unchallenged this could be "goodbye" to the inclusion of natural history, geology, history of science and technology etc etc" in mainstream museums. Curiosity and clarification is the basis of most human culture - that includes science doesn't it?
Good luck to all the potential recipients of the funds. Who is to manage their distribution ...? Oh, of course, it's the Arts Council isn't it.
Cheers!
Peter

What are people's initial impressions? A New Direction get mentioned in 2 of the case-studies, but that's about all we've been able to digest at present.
Interested to know everyone's thoughts, both on here and - if you fancy - in the A New Direction LinkedIn Group

Have great weekends all - read it in a park, under a tree, perhaps...!
