> >>> pp. 25 and 27, there are deans (decani) of Cambrai, you mean a "list of
deans" --there being only one Dean at a time, in any Chapter, i assume.
> Errr NOT always. I have at least one Breton charter of the mid 12th C where
the Chapter at Nantes appears to have two Deans witnessing the document.
are you sure that both of them are Deans of the chapter, Brenda?
rather than one --or both-- being a "rural dean" (whatever that is)?
i suppose that a dean who had just "retired" might still be given his
honorific title and appear with his new replacement, but, off hand, i don't
see how two Deans in a chapter would "work" --any more than having (*as an
institutional matter*) two Bishops, or two Popes, or two Presidents, or two
Prime Ministers or two Kings (well, the Capetian practice was to have
"co-kings," father and son, but that's not the same as having two equally
powerful, fully consecrated and active Kings).
as a middlevil would say, "a body cannot have two heads."
not that i don't believe your story about Nantes --just that i can't
understand how it would, as a practical matter, work.
much less the Simple but Vexing Question of: Why?
why (and how) would such an institutional arrangement have come into being?
on another note, i believe that i have found a solution to the
"decanus"/"deacon" conundrum which this string has metastasized into, thanks
to Herwig's sharp eye.
but, i left the thumb drive on which i wrote it at home, so everyone will have
to Hang Fire for another 24 hours.
i *hate* it when that happens.
a pretty Neat solution, if i do say so myself.
involving proposing a very precise date (1096) for the preaching activities of
Guibert's "deacon."
