> Thanks, but excommunication would have been expressed otherwise. It also
does not result in death at the stake! I am trying to find out what happened
to religious when they were handed over to the secular arm for punishment.
seems like it would have to have been the "secular arm" which did her in
--Holy Mother Church could hardly be seen as being responsible for a public
Frying.
>The reason for her demotion was blasphemy against the pope
was *that* grounds for being handed over to the Arm?
>(in later versions, signing a pact with the devil and sleeping with many men)
and afterwards she was burned.
well, Sleeping around, that's certainly a Burnable offense.
>All this in 1343, the first example of anyone being burned for anything in
Iceland.
at least Iceland has an excuse for coming late to the party --being out there
beyond even the Western Fringe.
my Theory (not at all my own invention) is that such things as public Fryings
were much more frequent in times of great Social Stress --no doubt the later
guys on Easter Island would have engaged in the practice, had they not
thoughtlessly deforested the island.
isn't 1343 about in the middle of the "Little Ice Age"?
Stressful times, indeed, in Northern Climes.
plus, the Black Death was nearly in sight.
