medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

of course you have no need for it, but the more Latiniacally Challenged
Anglophones on this list might like to know that the new translation of it
into English is really the only English translation ever published --i believe
that there is notice of a translation which was done in the '50 as a Ph.D.
dissertation by someone at the Catholic University of America, but apparently
never saw print.
i found the third "book" of that, "The Inner World," to be of particular
interest, and have been trying to assemble some questions about its content to
put to this list.
is anyone else familiar with this "Inner World" chapter/concept?
>> *was* there a "Dean" [decanus] of Cambrai in the early 12th c.?
> in the Gallia Christiana - not the most reliable source!
perhaps not, but there is an English expression: "Any Port in a Storm"
which certainly applies here.
> - in vol. 3,
i don't seem to have been able to find that volume on the web --have to look
again.
>pp. 25 and 27, there are deans (decani) of Cambrai,
you mean a "list of deans" --there being only one Dean at a time, in any
Chapter, i assume.
>and, to make matters more complicated, there is an Erlebaldus prepositus (!)
in 1101 and 1118.
those dates are certainly right --and the name might be unusual enough-- for
that to be the same fellow.
certainly in the Chartres chapter guys moved around --usually upward-- with
some frequency; i assume that this was a very common practice.
i'm not sure exactly when Guibert is writing --much less when the event he is
writing about occurred (which probably cannot be determined).
but, from his flattering description of the fellow, Erlebaldus would seem to
have been a good candidate for being a "diaconus" at the time G. is writing
about him and then being promoted to a Provostship shortly thereafter --but
probably not ending up as Decanus, since the GC doesn't include him in that
list.
we still need to locate the origin of the "decanus" mistake, however --and/or
to see see how Huygen's text reads.
given the careless mistake i found in the Monodies translation, it is quite
possible that this is another.
after all, anyone can confuse "decanus" with "diaconus," can't they?
>> wasn't Cambrai in the province of Reims
> yes, it was
then why isn't it in the two Reims volumes of the GC?
or is vol. III reflecting its later status as an archdiocese?
